Technician, Skilled Trades Laboratory


The Skilled Trades Lab Technician position provides support for the Chairperson, faculty, adjuncts and staff of the Design, Construction and Trades Department. This support includes inventory/preparation/ordering of consumables and tools, general cleaning of the lab, assisting with lab exercises inside and outside of class, tours for prospective students’ industry partners, and other duties as necessary. The technician performs routine preventive maintenance as needed, handling/disposing of hazardous chemicals, routine cleaning, and maintaining inventory records.



Lab Inventory & Facilities

  • Stores, organizes, cleans tools, equipment, workspaces, and floors for class and lab
  • areas. Assists faculty in preparing labs for semester and organizing areas at the end of semesters usage. Ensures tools, equipment, and training aids are functional and operational and performs needed diagnostic service and minor repairs. Replaces tools and equipment when necessary. Adheres to approved college standards regarding proper handling of hazardous materials. Utilizes College approved contractors to ensure proper handling of hazardous materials. Coordinates major service/repairs with external vendor, as needed. Collaborate with faculty/adjuncts to ensure proper/adequate tools and materials are available for classroom/lab instruction. Maintains and updates inventory of tools, special service kits, and equipment and stock items.

 

Program Support

  • Assists instructors and students in lab exercises; as requested. Opens/closes/monitors labs outside of class for additional student access. Answers routine questions, provides general information and performs duties as assigned to maintain good public and student relations. Performs routine maintenance and upkeep for labs and facilities.


Administrative

  • Monitors disbursements, orders needed items and obtains bid offers on new equipment. Keeps accurate records. Completes and maintains required documentation including inventory reports, consumables formulary, work orders, and requisitions. Monitors lab supply usages by section, communications with administration, and advises leadership regarding potential lab fee changes. Provides functional leadership for student support staff including providing training, mentorship, and support in completing assigned tasks.

Other duties as required

*Regular, predictable, and punctual attendance is required.


OTHER DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Attends all required department meetings and training.
  • Works assigned schedule.


MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year experience in the trades industry (electrician, carpenter, plumbing, welding, etc.).
  • *An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.


LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS

  • State Motor Vehicle Operator's License or demonstrable ability to gain access to work site(s).


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge of: General trades technology programs, standard construction supplies, associated tools and equipment, routine equipment and tool maintenance, and minor repair methods; working with procurement software and services; working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and Outlook; basic research techniques to locate suppliers, availability, and costs for materials; safe working practices.

Skill in: verbal and written communications; operation of job-related equipment; application of technical skills in applied technologies.

Ability to: Use multiple Workday functions including, but not limited to procurement, ordering, and validating orders received; scheduling work independently, demonstrating initiative; develop and maintain effective working relationships with associates, supervisors, job contacts, students, and general public; perform light manual labor for extended periods of time; maintain accurate and complete work records, work in a safe manner while following safety regulations and procedures.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

While performing duties of this job, the employee regularly exhibits digital dexterity when entering data into computer. The employee frequently sits for periods of time, stands, and walks. Employee converses verbally or manually with others in person as well as by telephone. Vision demands include close, relatively detailed vision when focusing on computer screen. Employee occasionally lifts up to 10 pounds.


WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Typical office environment. Regular exposure to moderate noise typical to business offices.
